Medicare enrollment for PT practices

Medicare PECOS enrollment services for physical therapists.

William Avery helps independent physical therapy practices prepare and follow through on Medicare enrollment. Often called Medicare credentialing, this is the enrollment process that CMS and its Medicare Administrative Contractors use to evaluate billing privileges.

Opening a practice or adding a therapist or location? We organize the application and follow-up while the provider retains responsibility for review and required signatures.

Start with the practice

Which Medicare enrollment needs attention?

An individual therapist's enrollment and a practice's enrollment are related, but they are not interchangeable. We review the current records, intended billing arrangement, practice locations, and responsible contractor before defining the work. CMS enrollment does not itself establish participation in a Medicare Advantage plan; confirm that plan’s contracting and enrollment requirements separately.

Individual therapist

Review whether the therapist needs an initial enrollment or an update, and how services will be billed through the practice.

Practice or group

Identify the applicable organization enrollment and any reassignment connecting the therapist's services to the group receiving payment.

Location or existing record

Check what is already on file and which proposed changes require an application, supporting records, or contractor clarification.

Prepare a consistent record

Organize the information before entering PECOS.

We build an application checklist for the agreed enrollment. Names, identifiers, ownership details, and addresses must stay consistent across records. Missing items stay visible, with an owner and next action.

Application support

Prepare the application. Keep review and signatures with the right people.

PECOS is CMS's online Medicare enrollment system. We help prepare the applicable application and supporting information using authorized access through CMS Identity & Access Management, known as I&A. We do not work by borrowing a provider's login.

  1. Step 01

    Confirm access and scope

Identify the provider or organization, the authorized access relationship, and who must review and sign. Resolve account or permission issues before handling the application.

  2. Step 02

    Prepare and review

Enter the agreed information, identify missing documents, and coordinate a review with the provider or appropriate authorized official. They remain responsible for the application's accuracy and required attestations.

  3. Step 03

    Coordinate submission

Arrange the required signatures and submission, then retain the confirmation and application reference. Permission to prepare an application does not authorize us to sign for a provider.

After submission

Follow MAC requests through the written decision.

A submitted application is not an approval. Your Medicare Administrative Contractor, or MAC, processes the enrollment and may request additional information. We track the application, organize those requests, and coordinate responses with your practice.

The work record distinguishes waiting on the contractor from waiting on a document or practice decision. CMS and the MAC control the enrollment determination and applicable effective dates; we do not promise approval, a fixed processing time, or retroactive payment.

A defined handoff

Leave your practice with a clear enrollment record.

You receive the application record, outstanding items, follow-up history, and contractor correspondence. We identify what remains unresolved so your team does not confuse an application in progress with permission to bill.

Revalidation, later enrollment changes, and ongoing record maintenance require a separate agreed scope. A Medicare enrollment engagement does not automatically include commercial payer applications or CAQH profile work.

Common questions

Know what happens next.

Is Medicare credentialing the same as Medicare enrollment?

People often use credentialing to describe the work, but Medicare enrollment is the process handled through CMS and its contractors. Our service helps organize and follow through on that enrollment; William Avery does not grant Medicare billing privileges.

Does an NPI or completed CAQH profile mean I am enrolled in Medicare?

No. An NPI identifies a provider, and CAQH profile work is separate from Medicare enrollment. Neither is a Medicare approval. Check the applicable Medicare enrollment record and written contractor decision before treating the process as complete.

Can you guarantee when we can start billing Medicare?

No. We can prepare the application, follow requests, and document the outcome. The applicable requirements, CMS or MAC decision, and effective dates determine the enrollment position. Your billing team must also verify the requirements for the services and claims involved.

What should we bring to the first conversation?

Bring the practice setup, number of therapists and locations, whether Medicare enrollments already exist, and the change or problem you need help with. Summary information is enough; document exchange and authorized access are arranged after the scope is agreed.
